Program Description

The goal of the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program is to graduate highly educated individuals and prepare them to lead in a variety of educational settings. The program emphasizes research in Latino and border education issues to improve educational outcomes, enhance economic conditions for Latino communities, promote instructional programs of high quality for diverse students, and support leadership development for members of nationally underrepresented groups in high-level academic positions.

From 2001 to 2008, 34 students have graduated and received their Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, 75% of the graduates identifying as Latino.

Currently, 27 students have passed their comprehensive exams and are in the dissertation-writing phase, 85% of the students identified as Latino.

Of the Texas public universities offering doctoral programs (Ed.D. and Ph.D.) in Educational Leadership or Educational Administration, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley awards the largest percentage of doctoral degrees to Hispanics.
