Overview

Through support from the Greater Texas Foundation, Excelencia in Education will examine and expand the use of innovative transfer and completion strategies for Texas students. The new project, “Practice to Policy for Latino Student Success in Higher Education: Looking at Transfers,” began February 2016.

“About 80 percent of Latino community college students in Texas indicate they plan to transfer to a university, but less than 20 percent actually do. This collaboration will continue to build our knowledge base about increasing success for the Texas Latino student population while providing Texas higher education institutions and policy makers research based and actionable information to more effectively serve and graduate all students.”
- Dr. Wynn Rosser, President and CEO of Greater Texas Foundation.

This project builds on a collaboration between the Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCCSE), the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), and Excelencia in Education, Engaging Latino Students for Transfer and College Completion. With support from the Kresge Foundation, these national leader organizations worked with twelve pairs of community colleges and baccalaureate institutions from urban locations-- total of twenty-four institutions-- to focus on strengthening the engagement, transfer, and college completion of their Latino students.

To gain further insights, focus groups with students, faculty, and staff at ten institutions were conducted. Visit CCCSE's YouTube page to view videos.
