Latinx and Immigrant Outreach

Overview

The Office of Latinx and Immigrant Outreach in the Department of Multiculturalism and Inclusion strives to provide access to high-quality educational opportunities for Latino students in the Commonwealth and to promote Latino student success during and after a student’s enrollment in and graduate from Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

Program Description

From 2000 to 2010, the Hispanic/Latino population of central Kentucky has grown 182%, and statewide Latino student enrollment in Kentucky Community and Technical College System institutions has increased 101% from fall 2006 to fall 2011. Since spring 2005, the Office of Latinx and Immigrant Outreach has served Kentucky’s Latino students by supporting their academic and social needs through specialized educational outreach, academic advising, family-based college coaching, career counseling, mentoring, student development, engagement, and development of community partnerships focused on student access and success.

The Latinx and Immigrant Outreach office also provides workshops, technical support, and coaching to key community-based organizations, educators, and educational gatekeepers on Latino student success.

Outcome

At Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Latino student enrollment increased 130% from fall 2006 to fall 2011. Over 3,600 students have been served by the Latino Multicultural College Fairs since 2006.
