The ALASS Institute provides the opportunity to learn from innovative professionals, share effective institutional strategies, powerful analysis, and exchange experiences using results oriented solutions to accelerating Latino student success.

Institute Objectives

  • Provide tactical information about evidence-based practices, strategies and resources to advance Latino achievement at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels and within community-based organizations.
  • Facilitate idea exchange and professional networking to grow and sustain communities of action advancing Latino student success in higher education.

How to Grow Examples of Excelencia in Your Institution and Community 

Examples of Excelencia is the only national data-driven initiative to identify and recognize programs with evidenced-based practices that increase Latino student success in higher education. Representatives from the 2020 Examples of Excelencia discussed how they introduce, sustain, and expand their efforts and serve Latino students and all students.

State Leadership Advancing Equity with a Latino Lens in a Time of Uncertainty

Even before the pandemic, state leaders were responding to the public’s heightened expectations of higher education and striving to close equity gaps. Two leaders from two very different states discussed their roles in supporting colleges and universities to better SERVE Latino students, while preparing all students, to thrive in 2020 and beyond.

Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation

The Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) effort seeks to address the historical and contemporary effects of race and racism within our communities in order to prepare the next generation of strategic leaders and critical thinkers. The goal is to promote racial healing and to catalyze efforts to address current inequities grounded in notions of a racial hierarchy.

Institutional Leadership Advancing Equity with a Latino Lens in a Time of Uncertainty

Institutional leaders from across the country are responding to a radically changing higher education landscape during an uncertain time in this country. Three leaders, who are part of Excelencia in Education’s Presidents for Latino Student Success network, shared their views about guiding and sustaining a campus community during challenging times to ensure Latino and other post-traditional students are more intentionally served.

This session shared tools that can help colleges and universities gain a fuller picture of student progress and outcomes, meet various reporting requirements, and identify where to focus their resources, like the Postsecondary Data Partnership (PDP).

The Future of Hispanic Serving Institutions: Post-COVID

This is the 25th anniversary of federal support for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). What role do HSIs play in this changing higher education landscape? To answer this question, Excelencia’s CEO and expert respondents traced the evolution of HSIs and considered the potential strategies that can reframe the equity paradigm to more intentionally serve Latino and other post-traditional students.
