Overview

The Signature Family Engagement Program (SFEP) at the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) provides families with the knowledge and skills needed to partner with schools and communities to ensure their children achieve their full potential. The SFEP seeks to educate, empower, and inspire families to take an active role in their student’s education while building community and a peer-to-peer network. Families are engaged in programming that encourages fostering a positive educational environment at home and at school to increase academic success.

Signature Family Engagement Program (SFEP)
Program Description

Families participating in SFEP better understand how to navigate school systems, access relevant information for student success, and college admission requirements. Over 8 weeks in 90 minute in-person or virtual increments, parents with children enrolled in K-12 schooling receive training, skills, and knowledge they need to help their students successfully navigate academic spaces and persist toward high school graduation and successful outcomes in higher education. Topics include information around standardized tests, financial aid, understanding the GPA calculation, learning about various staff and faculty roles in academic spaces, and knowledge regarding A-G requirements— a necessity for students aiming to enter the CSU and/or UC system in California. The majority of the families PIQE serves are Latine, and in many cases, newcomers with limited or no English proficiency, a household income of less than $60k/year, and a cursory understanding of the U.S. school system. The SFEP equips them with the knowledge they need to advocate for their children's long-term success. A positive side-effect is the social networks parents create and the increased levels of self-efficacy that they report.

Outcome

The SFEP impact is measured through inquiry typically conducted once every 5-7 years. The program measures the long-term outcomes of PIQE children whose parents participated in the SFEP. Based on data across all three reports (2013, 2018, and 2025), over half of PIQE children applied for financial aid (including through FAFSA), high percentages attended CA community colleges, CSU/UCs, and large percentages of parents reported behaviors around becoming more involved at their child's campus - all main concepts taught in the SFEP. Children of PIQE parents consistently graduate from high school at higher rates than the state average for Latines. Similarly, they enter and complete college in higher numbers than non-PIQE Latine children in California.

  • High School Graduation: In 2024, 91% of children of PIQE parents graduated from high school, compared to 85% of all CA students.

  • College Enrollment: In 2024, 57% of children of PIQE Parents enrolled in college, compared to 53% of all California students.
