Overview
The goal of MANA de San Diego’s (MANASD) Hermanitas Program is to empower young Latinas in San Diego to realize their fullest potential through sustained mentorship and transformative leadership development. The program is achieving a 100% high school graduation rate for participants and college enrollment of at least 90% among graduating seniors. Hermanitas, meaning “little sister”, aims to increase educational and career attainment rates among Latina youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, aligned with MANASD’s mission to transform communities by empowering Latinas to achieve upward mobility and a better quality of life. Hermanitas (Grades 7-12) extends into College Success services with tailored coaching on workforce readiness, achieving a 93% six-year college completion rate.

Program Description
Serving Latino students is critical in San Diego County, where Latinos make up nearly 50% of K-12 students. Graduation rates for low-income neighborhoods can drop as low as 25–28%, compared to a county-wide average of 82.5% (County Equity Indicators Report, 2021). By focusing on Latinas from underserved neighborhoods, the program consistently fills a gap in their support system, extending from middle school through college and into early career stages. Each Hermanita is paired with a relatable mentor, receiving guidance from middle school through high school graduation. Monthly seminars are continually refreshed to foster career/college exploration and personal development. In 2016, the creation of the College Success program expanded Hermanitas as a direct response to findings that youth require ongoing support to navigate challenges and graduate from college. The programs are co-led by dedicated volunteers who serve on committees and as mentors, and in addition to evaluations, a youth representative serves on the organization’s board, ensuring participant perspectives shape decisions. The intentional, community-driven approach keeps Hermanitas relevant, effective, and transformative for Latina youth and their families.
Outcome
These longitudinal programs support students from 7th grade through college, achieving college completion rates far exceeding those of non-program participants. In the last three years (2022–2025), the Hermanitas Program has consistently achieved positive outcomes:
College Completion: The College Success program achieved a six-year college completion rate of 94% for the Hermanitas class of 2023, and 93% for both the class of 2024 and class of 2025.
First-Year College Retention Rates: Within the last three years, 100% of first-year Hermanitas college students who enrolled in four-year institutions returned for their second year, compared to the 2021 national rate of 63.6% for First-Year Hispanic students at a four-year institution returning for their second year, and 71.5% for White non-Hispanic peers.
