Overview
The Cerritos College’s General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) equips students with the technical skills, industry-recognized certifications, and practical experience necessary to thrive in the evolving automotive workforce. Established in 1979, GM ASEP combines hands-on instruction, academic support, paid internships, and strategic industry partnerships. The program aims to 1) increase student credential attainment through stackable certificates, embedded industry certifications, and clearly defined academic milestones that lead to associate degrees, 2) expand early access to automotive education through dual enrollment with local high schools, accelerating Latino students’ entry to college and the workforce, and 3) maintain high retention and job placement rates by offering cohort-based models and structured internships under the mentorship of experienced GM-certified technicians.

Program Description
The GM ASEP was created in response to the growing regional demand for skilled technicians and the lack of accessible, manufacturer-specific automotive training in Southeast Los Angeles County. The program offers a structured, five-semester program that combines classroom instruction with paid work-based internships at GM dealerships, enabling students to earn while they learn. To broaden access and early engagement, the program partners with local high schools to offer dual-enrollment automotive courses. This early intervention model introduces students to technical education in a familiar setting, builds college credit momentum, and demystifies higher education for first-generation students and their families. Instruction is led by faculty who are program alumni, offering mentorship grounded in shared cultural and professional experience. Students gain hands-on experience with over 65 donated vehicles and gain access to GM’s online training, employer-sponsored internships, and competitions.
Outcome
Retention: From 2021 to 2024, Fall-to-Fall retention rates for Latino GM ASEP students increased from 69% to 79%, compared to 66% to 68% respectively for non-ASEP students.
Degree Completion: In 2023-2024, 78% of GM ASEP students earned a degree on time, with 79% identifying as Latino, compared to 11% of other Cerrito College students graduating on time.
Career/Workforce: 96% of Latino GM ASEP graduates were employed at GM dealerships, affirming the program’s effectiveness in workplace placement.
