Overview
CREAR (College Readiness, Achievement and Retention) Futuros is a college success peer-mentor program that recruits qualified Latino students in partner educational institutions of higher learning to mentor, guide, and support younger students, or mentees. Mentors, who are trained and developed by the Hispanic Federation (HF), assist mentees with support needed in navigating the new college landscape and by also sharing resources offered by HF and community-based member organizations and sponsors. The goals of the program are to 1) provide a mechanism of support to Latino students that ensures better academic outcomes, including greater rates of degree completion, and 2) promote leadership while providing financial support to qualified, selected, and contracted Latino student leaders to serve as mentors.

Program Description
Founded in 2012 with 4 colleges, CREAR was created to address Latino college retention and completion. This upcoming year, CREAR will be in 15HSIs: NYS (9), Illinois (2), Connecticut, Florida, California, and North Carolina, where recruitment focuses on Latino students but is open to all. Today’s model includes extensive curricula and workshops starting with a National 3-Day In-person Summer Training for all mentors, followed by monthly virtual trainings and career readiness workshops, biweekly 1-on-1 check-ins between mentors and mentees, monthly mentee group meetings (facilitated by mentors), and other national workshops for mentors and mentees (Career Leaders, Financial Literacy, Advocacy, Alumni events). CREAR maintains an active social media presence, utilizing LinkedIn and Instagram to share scholarship, college, and career resources with the students. Through LinkedIn, CREAR stays connected with the alumni network to celebrate and share their accomplishments in a quarterly newsletter. By creating a supportive network and community of care for first-year college students and providing access to resources, opportunities, and college and career readiness, CREAR aims to retain college students in their institutions of higher learning and assist with post-graduation plans.
