Adelante college entry program designed specifically for bilingual Latino health and human services personnel interested in earning a bachelor's degree. The Adelante certificate is one of the main initiatives of the University of Saint Joseph’s new Institute for Latino Community Practice. The Institute for Latino Community Practice at USJ is committed to preparing undergraduate and graduate students for culturally and linguistically competent leadership in their professions and creating a community of learners dedicated to advancement of knowledge and best practices to serve the Latino population. We carry out this mission in a three-pronged approach: Academic programs (e.g Adelante), Research on and with Latino Communities, and Community activities to bridge our academic community with local communities.

Program Description

The goals are to:
(1) recruit, retain, and graduate bilingual Latino health and human services personnel;
(2) prepare students for career advancement;
(3) provide on-going professional development; and
(4) develop peer-support systems for Latino adult learners (college students of non-traditional age).

Twelve students are enrolled in the 2012-13 cohort. All students matriculated into bachelor’s degree programs. Three of these students have completed their bachelor’s degree and are graduating in May 2013. The students also developed educational and career development plans. Students participated in eight peer support meetings throughout the 2012-2013 year which they called, “The Circle of Support”.
