Hispanic children 4 to 5 years of age had lower average scores in mathematics knowledge and skills than white, black, or Asian children in 2005-06.

Over her 30 year career in education Dr. Wheelan has served as a faculty member, chief student services officer, campus provost, college president, State Secretary of Education and President of an accrediting association. In several of those roles she was the first African American and/or woman to serve in those capacities.
Dr. Wheelan has received numerous awards and recognition including four honorary degrees; Washingtonian Magazine's 100 Most Powerful Women in Washington, DC and the John E. Roueche National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development's International Leadership Award Her service on board of directors includes the American Association of Community Colleges; the Lumina Foundation for Education, and the President's Round Table of the National Council on Black American Affairs.
