Upward Bound Parent-to-Parent Program
Strengthen the parental role that will create a college success culture by giving parents the tools to support their children beyond the college admission process. Replication of Upward Bound University of Texas program that trains parent advocates/mentors to conduct college access outreach to Latino parents as well as on-going mentoring.
- Increase high school parents' understanding of the benefits of college and their role in influencing their children's academic success.
- Increase parents understanding of college requirement and the college application process.
- Increase parents' recognition of the importance of community involvement and volunteerism.
- Facilitate parents' leadership in promoting college knowledge to other families.
- Increase student preparation and enrollment in college.
A total of 42 parent volunteers were recruited and trained reaching 652 other parents who attended workshops around core lessons. These lessons included dual and concurrent enrollment programs. In addition to the volunteers and participants, the project worked in collaboration with a community based organization, Abriendo Puertas, the university and school district as well as the TRIO programs (Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science, Talent Search) in order to leverage resources.
