Department of Bilingual Education
The graduate programs in the Department of Bilingual Education (DBE) at Boise State University are designed to prepare educators for the global community. The department’s graduate programs support the university’s main goal, which is to educate citizens for the culturally pluralistic, technological, global society of the 21st century. These programs aim to shape leaders in both classroom instruction and advocacy for the linguistically and culturally diverse children of this region and the world. They promote pedagogical innovations to benefit the academic development of all learners, regardless of race, class, gender, age, or special needs.
The Department of Bilingual Education at Boise State University is relatively young. It wasn’t until 2004 when it became a Department after being part of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Foundational Studies. DEB demographics are as follows: • spring 2008 graduate enrollment, 44 (27.3% Hispanic) • fall 2004-spring 2008 graduate enrollment, 121 (25.7% Hispanic) • fall 2004-spring 2008 graduates, 65 (23% Hispanic) Upon completing the Master’s programs, all graduates have remained in their geographical area and taught. In Jefferson, a school in Nampa, three members of a four-person team graduated from the same summer cohort. Together, they implemented effective and successful strategies to help ELLs (English language learners) succeed. Not only did they make significant changes in the ESL program at that school but they became a voice for the youth vis-à-vis the principal and the teacher. In the Kuna School District, several students are working in the same school, Reed Elementary. They have been pillars in the development of a new, dual language immersion program that started this year. They helped to recruit other teachers and have helped inform and educate others about the effects and benefits of bilingual education, ESL and dual language immersion. A student in the Hailey/Sun Valley cohort presented her graduate seminar research paper on ESL students to the state legislature. Another student published her work in the California Association of Bilingual Educators.
