¡Excelencia in Education! has just released Roadmap for Ensuring America's Future. It is a response to the lofty goal President Obama set in 2009: for the U.S. to become the top ranked country in the world in college degree attainment by 2020.
In order to reach this goal, there must be a substantial increase in college completion across all groups of people, but Latino college completion is especially crucial because:
"1) the Latino population is growing rapidly and will make up a greater percent of the U.S. population by 2020; 2) Latino educational attainment is currently lower than that of other groups; and, 3) many economically competitive jobs in the U.S. will soon require education beyond a high school degree. Latinos will have to earn 5.5 million degrees to close equity gaps and help meet the nation's degree attainment goals by 2020."
The recommendations made by Excelencia in Education and their 60 partner organizations-Ensuring America's Future (EAF)-are based on levels that include community, college/institution, state, and federal.
