Latino Students and the College Completion Agenda

With federal, state, institutional and foundation efforts in higher
education increasingly focused on completion rates, a key factor will
be the ability of programs and policies to raise the rates for Latino
students.

On Tuesday, July 27, at 2 p.m. Eastern, Sarita E. Brown,
president of Excelencia in Education and one of the leading national
experts on Latino students and higher education, will lead an Inside Higher Ed audio conference. She will present information on how institutions can evaluate their current success at educating Latino students, and how they can improve. The program is designed for all kinds of institutions -- public and private, two-year and four-year, those with large Latino populations and those with relatively few Latino students.

Among the topics she will cover:

• How to find and use tools for looking at institutional data to see how your college is doing.

  • How to create a campus team to encourage progress.
  • How to reach potential Latino students and their families.
  • How Latino students use financial aid.

• How to improve Latino completion rates and why they matter so much to larger efforts to graduate more American students.

The program will feature a 30-minute presentation and a 30-minute question-and-answer period. The entire program will last one hour.

Emerging HSIs: Serving Latino Students, authored by Excelencia in Education with support from the TG Public Benefits Program, reveals that emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) - institutions that enroll 15-24 percent or more undergraduate full-time equivalent Hispanic students- are not waiting for official HSI status to enact policies to better serve Latino students.

The webinar will focus on issues relating to Emerging HSIs and how all institutions can apply these lessons learned to support the success of Latino students at institutions of higher education.

This event has been sponsored by the TG Public Benefit Grant Program.

Presenter Deborah Santiago, vice president for policy and research, Excelencia in Education
