NALEO Educational Fund
In 2002, the NALEO Educational Fund developed an education initiative designed to capitalize on the large number of Latino elected officials who hold the position of school board member. These public servants are on the front lines in addressing the current Latino achievement gap. To support their work, the NALEO Educational Fund, with funding from State Farm Insurances, created the National Education Leadership Initiative (NELI). Organized in collaboration with the Hispanic Council of the National School Boards Association (NSBA) and its state affiliates, NELI offers regional institutes focused on education reform strategies, leadership development and networking services for the nation's Latino school board members, and has established a framework to address the Latino achievement gap K-12. Now, in its fourth year, NELI is expanding its scope to connect with state legislators and other elected officials and will in the next several years extend to address Pre K - higher education. Excelencia and the NALEO Educational Fund are partnering to develop the content and action agenda for future institutes as part of a long-term education strategy.
Excelencia produced Looking Toward the Future: What's on the Education Horizon in 2005 , for the 2004 NALEO annual conference. The paper provides a synopsis of educational issues at elementary and secondary education (K-12) and in higher education and potential developments at the federal and state levels that will impact Latinos in education. The Fact sheets listed on this page were prepared to support the expansion of Latino elected officials knowledge of key issues affecting Latino student success in education.
